With their 2-1 victory over Spain on Monday, the USWNT advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup. As they’re busy defending their 2015 win, their lawsuit against U.S. Soccer, which alleges “years of ongoing institutionalized gender discrimination,” continues.
The lawsuit was filed on International Women’s Day 2019, March 8, and drew on a previous wage complaint filed to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2016, after the team won in 2015.
That complaint underscored the gross disparity in pay between U.S. Soccer’s women’s and men’s teams. Women players make substantially less than those on the men’s team, despite the overwhelming success of the women’s team — including that 2015 World Cup win, not to mention winning four gold medals and a silver medal over the last six Summer Olympics.
